Citizens bring to Congress a proposal to protect and promote shrimp, sea bream, sea bass and eel from the Mar Menor (25/02/2019)

Ciudadanos wants shrimps, sea breams, sea bass and eels from the Mar Menor to have more protection and promotion.

"Currently, these four species represent the basis and sustenance of the fishing sector, and for that reason we want them to have their own Protected Geographical Indication, which allows them to articulate their protection and promote their consumption," said Deputy José Luis Martínez, who has presented the Proposition No of Law in this sense in the fish fishermen's market accompanied by the orange spokesmen in San Javier, Los Alcázares and San Pedro del Pinatar itself.

Martinez stressed that "it is necessary to continue worrying about our Mar Menor and all the activity it generates, especially the tourism sector, but also fishing, after the situation we have experienced recently, which can be described as environmental catastrophe."

This situation has eliminated practically eight of the twelve species that were captured in the salt lagoon, according to the data of the Fishermen's Association of Mar Menor itself: "Today the magre or the chirrete are no longer present, and it is the sea bass, with a 70% of the catches;

and the shrimp with 15% those that concentrate in the networks.

That is why we must promote their promotion and give them support, and that is what Ciudadanos aims to achieve in the Congress of Deputies with this initiative, "said the orange parliamentarian.

"We have to recover the reputation of the fish of the Mar Menor, which has been seriously damaged without any action being taken by the regional government," said the spokesman for the Cs municipal group in San Pedro del Pinatar, José Luis. Ros.

"If we do not take measures, the negligence and permissiveness of the Regional Administration can end in a few years with traditional fishing in the Mar Menor," he added.
