San Pedro supports the campaign "town without my car" (23/09/2010)

For the first time, San Pedro del Pinatar has joined the conference "The city without my car!"

since 1998 is celebrated on September 22 throughout the European Union.

This initiative is part of the "European Mobility Week" that 16 to 22 September has organized the Department of Environment with various activities.

The massive increase in motor vehicle traffic in recent years in cities has provoked a strong social reaction to noise, pollution and traffic, and that vulnerable groups like children and the elderly suffer the worst consequences.

In order to restrict motor vehicle traffic on some streets of the municipality, with responsibility for regulating the traffic shut down access to downtown, specifically to the Plaza de la Constitucion and Plaza of Spain.

These are high traffic public places for pedestrians and cyclists at that time, enjoyed a more relaxed, peaceful and free of contamination.

The c / Emilio Castelar Plaza de la Constitution, usually heavily traveled by vehicles, one day became a public open space for pedestrians and bicycles.

Without bothering to look across the street or operate only on sidewalks, streets were occupied by pedestrians walking freely without the usual hassles caused by traffic.

The experience was very satisfactory as there were no excessive traffic problems on the perimeter access to the plazas or parking problems.

In addition, as an additional method to verify the benefits of limiting vehicles carried out by technicians of the City, a measurement of noise levels in the environment of the Plaza de la Constitution, comparing a typical day of traffic with the car-free day.

The data were very clear: during a normal day, we measured noise levels of 67 dB (A) day period, and the car-free day values were around 59 dB (A) at the same time.

The decibel (dB) is a logarithmic unit, and 3 db of difference between two measurements is a twofold increase in the perceived loudness.

That is, according to measurements taken on a normal day of traffic on city supports five times more noise than a "day without cars."
