ANSE complaint permanent illegal fishing in the Salinas and Arenales Regional Park of San Pedro del Pinatar (20/08/2014)

Members of the Association have agreed this morning to the Mediterranean side of La Encaņizada (Mar Menor) to denounce the continued use of illegal fishing gear in the Salinas and Arenales Regional Park of San Pedro del Pinatar.

ANSE activists have removed one of the illegal nets and placed a banner with the slogan "Stop Illegal PR San Pedro. ANSE".

The Mediterranean side of Las Encaņizadas, like the Mar Menor is considered Zone Priority Conservation Plan for Natural Resources (PORN) Regional Park Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar, approved in 1995, which has five forms of protection, including four international: Regional Park, Site of Community Importance (SCI), Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA), Specially Protected Area of Mediterranean Importance (ZEPIM) and Wetland of International Importance Ramsar.

Said PORN and was struck nearly 20 years ago on the need for the "... eradication of illegal fishing, which is a serious detriment to the communities of birds, especially nesting, which are associated to this unique habitat."

Fishing activity reported by ANSE is by about a dozen small boats length (15 on Sunday August 3 were detected), between 4 and 7 m approximately, which remain anchored on the north bank of the Encaņizada at coat called "escullos".

Almost all vessels lacking identification register, as forces the rules of fishing, and the few that have belong to sports list.

The art used is paranza, similar to those used on the inner shores of the Mar Menor, in varying numbers, between half a dozen and more than a dozen pieces a day, rising early in the morning, starting before of sunrise.

The networks are around the natural channel of communication between the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor, and come to be at certain times and days a real tangle that impedes fish movement, and severely limits the use of the area by the wild birds, entraņando a serious hazard to larger birds.

Many of the networks are based on half-metallic rebar driven into the ground, so they serve to delimit the network paths, which is regularly cited rebar holding it in the air easier to clean without removing them from the fishing zone .

To support work of fishing there are three small wooden platforms over nailed deep pillars, which are used to store the network when they are not used.

Both the central wall of the Encaņizada and the pitfalls are numerous fragments of abandoned nets, plus nets drying in the sun.

Consultations by ANSE before the Service of Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Environment of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, have confirmed that the use of paranzas and other related fishing gear is expressly prohibited the gullets of communication between the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor, as is the case.

ASEAN has also contacted the Fishermen's Association of San Pedro del Pinatar, which groups all professional fishermen del Mar Menor, who reported that the Association had no record of any of his associates perform some activity in the area.

The practice of illegal fishing activity in a space like the Regional Park, SPA, ZEPIM, LIC and Ramsar Wetland Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar also contravenes all the recommendations contained in the "Control Regime fishing the European Union ", and clearly violates the law apply to Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) and the Habitat and Birds Directives.

The Association has filed complaints of illegal activity to the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Environment of the Autonomous Region, the Coastal Murcia, the City of San Javier and Maritime Services Protection of Nature of the Civil Guard requesting urgent action to end illegal fishing within the protected space.
