The Spanish Institute of Oceanography analyzes the state of the Mar Menor in a scientific conference (02/12/2014)

The mayor of San Pedro del Pinatar, Visitation Martinez;

the Director General of Research and Innovation of the Autonomous Community of Murcia, Celia Martinez, director of the Oceanographic Centre of Murcia, José María Bellido, today inaugurated the scientific Days Mar Menor, taking place on 2 and 3 December in this center.

These seminars include more than a dozen papers by researchers and experts from various educational institutions and scientific College-as the Spanish Institute of Oceanography own, universities of Murcia, Alicante, Polytechnic University of Cartagena and the Algarve;

Geological and Mining Institute of Spain, CSIC, or the Euro-Mediterranean Water Institute.

José María Bellido explained that this scientific meeting is part of the centenary of the IEO, an institution that since its inception aims to study the sea in a transversal and interdisciplinary manner.

The director of the Oceanographic Centre of Murcia has indicated that the aim of this conference is to provide a current view of knowledge on coastal lagoon gathering the main lines of research that are developing in this environment.

So, the day today has focused on the biology and ecology of the Mar Menor, while morning presentations will focus on the physico-chemical conditions and the impact of human activities.

Meanwhile, Celia Martinez has stressed the need to find a present and a sustainable future for the Mar Menor.

A sustainable uses that should be bounded and respond to scientific knowledge, as they are the only ones that provide objective criteria.

He also praised the work done from the IEO, especially in the work focused on the lagoon and announced that since the general direction creating an Innovation Circle on the Mar Menor is encouraged.

The mayor of San Pedro del Pinatar, Visitation Martinez, has reviewed the presence and growth of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography in the Mar Menor, consolidation creating a center in Lo Pagan and some of the most relevant studies and work on issues such as jellyfish, Posidonia or recovery of horse Mar.

He also stated that the purpose of all relevant government is to preserve the Mar Menor, source of life for coastal municipalities, which must seek that balance between conservation and development of sectors such as fisheries and tourism.

Visitation Martinez thanked the holding of this conference, "in which scientists and researchers show an actual photograph of the Mar Menor from which we note all parties involved in the conservation of the lake," he concluded.
