Fishermen in the Mar Menor will be honored for their contribution to the campaign on seahorse catches (19/12/2008)

The director general of Livestock and Fisheries, Adolfo Falagas, will attend tomorrow at 12:00 am (San Pedro del Pinatar, Center for Wetlands 'Las Salinas', Port Road, s / n) the act of recognition to the fishermen of Mar Menor who have participated in the Campaign to raise awareness of bycatch of sea horse ', organized by the Hippocampus, sponsored by the Foundation for the Protection Cluster and Conservation of the Mar Menor, attached to the Ministry of Agriculture and Water

The seahorse is a fish that lives in the kelp beds and seagrass and feeds on small invertebrates that sucks with its distinctive snout.

Their mode of reproduction is unique because it is the male that cares for the eggs inside until the birth of the fry, which became independent immediately after the 'birth' of the masculine.

This species is critically endangered in the Mar Menor, so that its extinction would be inevitable unless we take appropriate action.

Among the causes of their present situation are highlighted, inter alia, the destruction of their habitat and fisheries of copies for use as souvenirs.

In addition, said the cause of their decline the increase of foreign species in the lagoon, the resulting increase in predators or beach cleaning, if this is done on the front line when the horses are found in shallow areas during the reproduction.

The above campaign is part of the 'Project Seahorse' to the Global Nature Fund, in collaboration with the Cluster, developed for the preservation of populations of this rare species on the coastline of the Region.

This project provides for other initiatives and actions for conservation and habitat management, and the study of the possible reproduction in captivity of this species for the reinforcement of wild populations.

Recommendations

The awareness campaign was developed in the municipalities bordering the Mar Menor and its area of influence and for that we had information material, a series of lectures and a traveling exhibition.

The entities behind this campaign recommend that residents and visitors to the Mar Menor do not collect any live sea horse and return the fish caught in fishing gear into the sea.

It also calls on citizens to be aware of the need to conserve this species and its habitat which are reported where seagrass beds are to cooperate to prevent access by boats and other motor vehicles such as jet skis, which could contribute to its destruction.

Hippocampus winning partnership

Hippocampus Association, with support from the Cluster Foundation, wants to establish a network of sightings of seahorses, to determine the status of populations of this species in the Mar Menor.

This Association was awarded the 'Ones Mediterranean 2008 ", promoted by the entity' Mediterrania Centre Environmental Initiatives', based in Tarragona, which over 14 years has financially rewarding the work of individuals or entities which stand in conservation initiatives the environment and solidarity.
