Agriculture confirms the recovery of populations of Common Tern and Little Tern in the Salinas de San Pedro del Pinatar (04/08/2009)

The Ministry of Agriculture and Water has confirmed the recovery of populations of Common Tern and Little Tern in the Regional Park of Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar.

The director general of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity, Pablo Fernandez, said in this connection that "while in 2004-2008 the average of Common Tern breeding pairs was 350 in 2009 has increased to 455 pairs, of which 40 are have been established in the seven floating islands that the Ministry set out in that park to encourage reproduction.

As for the Tern, has spent an average of 199 breeding pairs in the same period to 330 pairs in 2009. "

The Regional Park of Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar is the largest wetland in the Mar Menor with 856 hectares.

This complex system, occupied mostly by active salt, has been declared a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA).

Furthermore, with the Mar Menor and other wetlands in their bank, make a Wetland of International Importance declared by the Ramsar Convention in 1994, especially because of its habitat for waterfowl, which highlights the wintering populations of Flamenco and Shelduck and breeding species such as Avocet, Stilt, Common Tern and Little Tern.

The Common Tern is a species listed in 'Special Interest'.

The breeding population is located exclusively in the Salinas de San Pedro del Pinatar, which is threatened by predation by other species.

The population decline in recent years Tern led the Ministry to take measures to prevent their disappearance, such as the installation of nesting platforms.

For its part, the Tern is a species listed as 'Vulnerable'.

The presence of a large breeding colony in the Salinas de San Pedro, along with other species, in 1988 prompted the declaration of this area as an SPA.

Platform Installation

The use of nesting platforms to promote the reproduction has been successfully tested in other protected wetlands, such as the Biological Station of Tour du Valat (France) or the Natural Park El Hondo Natural Park and Santa Pola.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Water, through the Foundation Cluster Mar Menor, installed last year in the salt room seven platforms of 3x3 meters, with wooden base affixed to a float system.

Each of these floating islands had a ramp to facilitate access of pups to the base and two shaded areas to protect them from intense sunlight.

In the Salinas de San Pedro del Pinatar Tern and Common Tern colonies are mixed with other species such as Piconegra Pagaza, Avocet, Stilt and Kentish Plover, which are also potential users of these platforms to build their nests.

Fernandez concluded that "the Mediterranean Wetlands Committee of the Ramsar Wetlands Convention, consisting of all governments in the Mediterranean region, the Palestinian Authority, the European Commission, the Barcelona Convention, Bern and Ramsar, and NGOs and international institutions wetlands, conservation advised to take initiatives of its kind in the most important wetlands, including the Mar Menor is being Ramsar Site.
