The Mayor of San Pedro del Pinatar, Visitación Martínez, the General Director of the Natural Environment, Consuelo Rosauro Meseguer and the Director of Salinera Española in San Pedro del Pinatar, Julio Francisco Fernández Ramos, signed today, accompanied by the Councilor for the Environment, Pedro Javier Sánchez Aznar and Gustavo Ballesteros, coordinator of the LIFE Salinas Project, the association agreement between salinera español sa, the town hall and the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia for the realization of the Life Project granted "conservation of aquatic habitats and birds in the salt flats and sands of San Pedro del Pinatar ".
The life program is a financial instrument of the European Union dedicated exclusively to the environment, which has granted funding in its 2017 call for the conservation project of habitats and waterfowl in the salt flats and sandy areas of the town.
This project will involve an investment of € 1,790,845 for various actions and will start on September 1, with a duration of 4 years (2018-2022) and a maximum eligible costs of € 1,336,825 and a funding rate of € 75. % of these costs, which translates into a maximum contribution of the European Union of € 1,002,618
The main partner and coordinator of the project is the company Salinera Española, with the collaboration of the City of San Pedro del Pinatar, the Directorate General of Natural Environment of the Autonomous Community, the University of Murcia, Anse and Mae d'Agua (Portugal), among others.
The City of San Pedro del Pinatar, as co-financer, will incur a total cost of € 27,567.
In this way, it will contribute financially to the project and will benefit from the financial assistance of the Commission, contributing 10,037 € to the project and receiving from the coordinating beneficiary (Salinera Española, SA) a maximum amount of 17,530 €, charged to the EU contribution to this LIFE project.
The main objective of this project is to achieve an optimal state of conservation of the main habitats and waterfowl, as well as to improve salt production through a multitude of actions, such as recovering the dunes in the first half kilometer of the beach of the Llana, a section very damaged by the coastal erosion, improve the water circuit of the pond of Coterillo to reduce the saline concentration of water that will favor the increase of biodiversity.
In addition it will try to eradicate in all the Natural Park the exotic-invasive plant species and build new salt mines, adapt the others and the water passages of the salineros puddles located on both sides of the access road to the Port of San Pedro del Pinatar .
