The City Council sports the banner commemorating the 40th anniversary of this key infrastructure for the socioeconomic development of the Spanish Levante.
The mayor of San Pedro del Pinatar, Visitación Martínez, the president of the Central Union of Irrigators (SCRATS), Lucas Jiménez, and the president of the Community of Irrigators of Campo de Cartagena, Manuel Martínez Madrid, accompanied by agricultural entrepreneurs of the municipality, attended today to the placement of the banner commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Tajo-Segura Transfer.
Visitación Martínez stressed the importance of this infrastructure, "which directly supplies more than 2.5 million inhabitants, guarantees the maintenance of 250,000 jobs and is an example of cooperation between basins as a solution to the structural water scarcity of the Segura basin "
The mayor also noted that "the transfer has made possible the growth and empowerment of an agricultural sector that is also a reference in quality, innovation and environmental responsibility, because farmers in the Levant have amply demonstrated the unbeatable use they make of such a scarce commodity. like the water".
In this sense, Manuel Martínez indicated that, thanks to the Transfer, "we went from a survival agriculture to an industrial process of agro-alimentary production referring to Europe and the world".
For his part, the president of SCRATS claimed the importance of this infrastructure and the need to defend it from "discordant voices that question this transfer, which has been and must remain a key element for the citizens of the Region of Murcia, Alicante and Almería ".
