It is the only European team that includes people with intellectual disabilities, a fact that deserves recognition from the European Dragon Boat Federation
Double success of the Aidemar and Pinatarense Sports Association clubs in the XVIII edition of the European Dragon Boat Championship held in Seville from July 25 to 28 and that this year has contemplated, for the first time after 18 championships, the participation of people with disability in the Paradragon modality, where mixed teams formed by athletes with disabilities and inclusive athletes participate [1].
In the championship have participated more than 2100 athletes from 20 different countries.
For Jorge Carracedo, President of the Spanish Dragon Boat Association, the participation of inclusive dragon boat teams has been a historic milestone in the Dragon Boat Championships.
Recognizes that, thanks to the participation and involvement of some clubs such as the Pinatarense Sports Association, a resounding success has been achieved in the Paradragon category that represents a turning point in Dragon Boat competitions
Our team has participated with two boats in the competitions of 200 meters, 500 meters and 2000 meters reaching, in the three races, historical bronze medals, which represents an unprecedented success within the regional inclusive sport landscape.
For, Pedro J. Sánchez, President of the Aidemar Sports Club, the fact that “that athletes share, live with people with disabilities and that they, in addition, feel protagonists is a great step to achieve full inclusion†much more valuable than the important sports achievements achieved.
On the other hand, Sonia Martínez, President of the Pinatarense Sports Association trusts that “this project that we have started this year with the Aidemar Sports Club is consolidated since at the sports and personal level of the members of our club it is a huge gratification to share moments , efforts and illusions with these people with intellectual disabilities but with great personal dignity â€
The inclusive team of the Aidemar Sports Club and Pinatarense Sports Association has the peculiarity that it has been the only participating team whose components presented an intellectual disability.
The rest presented teams with people with physical and / or sensory disabilities.
In this way, the team has become a pioneer in the inclusion of the group of people with intellectual disabilities within the sporting events of the first order.
This fact has been recognized by Nigel Bedford, Head of the Paradragon Commission of the European Dragon Boat Federation, who stated, in relation to our participation, that he was “delighted to say that we have two teams in the Mar Menor that are competing in 200 meters, 500 meters and 2000 meters and that have exceeded my expectations. â€
Nigel Bedford also pointed out that our team represents “a fantastic example of how people with intellectual disabilities can get on a dragon boat and raise the highest standard of competition and show the rest of the world that having a disability is not a barrier to Have fun, enjoy the competition and win medals.
I am delighted that the ADP-AIDEMAR team came and I hope that in the future we will see more teams like this team competing in Paradragon events â€
The institutional collaboration of the Mar Menor region key to these successes
But these successes would not have been possible without the involvement and support of companies in the Mar Menor region interested in achieving full integration and inclusion, through sport, of people with intellectual disabilities.
Companies and financial entities that have turned over the years in the inclusion projects promoted by the Aidemar Sports Club.
Our participation in these XVIII European Dragon Boat Championships has been possible thanks to the collaboration of
