Ecologists in Action showed this morning their solidarity with the Fishermen's Association of San Pedro del Pinatar, whose fleet has been paralyzed due to the serious state of degradation of the Mar Menor.
For the environmental organization, the administration has to act with agility and responsibility, to ensure that people who depend on this sector are not helpless.
In the first place, the collection of a subsidy for unemployment of the activity must be expedited, since the fleet has been stopped for days, and the forecast is that the activity cannot be restarted in several months.
Secondly, an agreement must be reached with the Fishermen's Association of San Pedro del Pinatar, to carry out a biological strike in the coming months, while assessing the status of the species, both those of fishing interest and those they interact with these, and the moment in which the activity can be resumed is established, on which species and quotas.
This must be done taking into account that the sector must be compensated for the impact on its activity, due to the degradation of the Mar Menor caused by the excess of mainly agricultural nutrients.
Something that this brotherhood has been warning for some time.
