Caritas Parroquial, Red Cross Mar Menor Norte and Amor por Amor distribute basic food to hundreds of families in the town, adapting this service to the current health crisis caused by the coronavirus. The mayor of San Pedro del Pinatar, Visitación Martínez, and the councilor for Social Welfare, Fuensanta García, held a meeting by teleconference with the presidents of the Red Cross Mar Menor Norte, Cáritas Parroquial and Amor por Amor associations, with the aim of coordinate and analyze the needs in the distribution of food to vulnerable families in the locality. These three associations collaborate with the Food Bank of the Region of Murcia in the distribution of basic necessities to people with low resources, in coordination with the Department of Social Welfare, which also offers individual aid for basic necessities. These products are completed annually with the "Solidarity Basket" of the City of San Pedro del Pinatar which, through the Department of Citizen Participation, subsidizes these associations to complete the products of the food bank with other supplements, to ensure a diet balanced these families.
The Solidarity Basket has a budget of 33,000 euros for 2020, of which 3,000 are contributed by Obra Social La Caixa. In addition, in the face of the health and social crisis caused by COVID-19, the mayor announced to the representatives of these associations that the City Council will make an extraordinary provision to these groups throughout the year so that these foods can reach all those who they need. In this sense, he recalled that the City Council will allocate 1.2 million euros to alleviate the effects of the coronavirus and that the budget for Social Services will triple in 2020 to reach all people in vulnerable situations.
