The Department of Citizen Participation has promoted this initiative since 2013, complementing the food bank's products and with an annual endowment that in 2020 reaches 33,000 euros, 30,000 from the municipal budget and 3,000 euros donated by Obra Social La Caixa. The municipal initiative "Cesta Solidaria", which was born in 2013 with the aim of coordinating and completing the food aid resources that reach the most needy families in Pinar del Río, through the region's food bank, private donations and companies, the Department of Social Services and local associations that work to care for this group, such as Cáritas Parroquial and Red Cross Mar Menor Norte. This project has grown over the years and currently has a total annual allocation of 33,000 euros, of which 3,000 are donated by Obra Social La Caixa, which contributes a total of 6,500 euros to the City Council for municipal social initiatives. The Councilor for Citizen Participation, Zoilo Ballester has highlighted the work of the associations Cáritas Parroquial and Red Cross Mar Menor Norte during this pandemic "are collaborating from the outset, providing solutions to new problems arising from the current crisis, creating synergies and taking advantage of the economic, human and social resources, being able to offer effective responses to the current problem " "The coordination work between the City Council and the associations, which has been developing since 2013, has made it possible for the administration to have been swift and fluid in the midst of a pandemic caused by COVID-19, being able to reach all the families that need it", The councilor has stated. For the presidents of Cáritas Parroquial, Antonio Tárraga, and of the Red Cross Mar Menor Norte, Antonio Sánchez, this work has been possible thanks to the strategic collaboration of public administration, local companies, Obra Social La Caixa, and the work of its members and partners that has been impeccable in the face of the health crisis and the need for food to supply all the families that have needed help. Currently these associations continue to provide their services from the Cáritas Associations Hotel (Avenida El Tabilla, intersection with Avda.
Los Antolinos) and the local Red Cross delegation (Calle Zurbarán, 10).
