San Pedro develop a project to develop microalgae compound feed (09/09/2016)

Murciano Research Institute and Agricultural Development and Food of Murcia (imide) is involved in a project, along with the company Buggypower and Technology Center for Energy and Environment (CETENMA) for microalgae cultivation and processing into feed fish farming, which uses the rich properties of these microorganisms and improves the quality of farmed fish.

In this regard, work has begun for the construction of the plant for the cultivation of microalgae, which will occupy an area of 100 square meters and will be located in marine aquaculture station Imida in San Pedro del Pinatar.

This infrastructure is the first step of the project has been called 'Development of new aquaculture feed based on the functional properties of microalgae (Algafeed)', which is funded by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, within the call 'Challenges 2015 collaboration 'that promotes R & D + i.

Microalgae have a composition rich in proteins, carbohydrates, fatty acids and other trace elements of high nutritional quality, and naturally part of the base of the food chain all existing aquatic species.

In addition, many species of these microorganisms may represent a natural source of compounds with functional properties.

The Director General of Agrifood Innovation, Juana Mulero, who participated this morning in the presentation of this project, said that "the use of microalgae as a basis for the development of additives or functional feed for aquaculture can respond to two current market needs eating fish: fish aquaculture as a natural product, high quality and functional properties, and improving the process of preserving fish aquaculture ".

For its part, the deputy mayor of San Pedro del Pinatar, Pedro Javier Sanchez, thanked this important scientific investment is made in the town and recalled the importance of such projects for the aquaculture sector in the municipality.

Intensive aquaculture, as production process, can control the quality and composition of the final product through food, with fish quality, nutritious and healthy.

However, the fish is one of the most perishable foodstuffs existing with limited lifetime.

Buggypower, the company involved in the project, is dedicated to the production of microalgae in closed and highly controlled systems, which uses proprietary technology that allows you to get high quality algal biomass.
