Environment starts the pilot project for the restoration of sandy bottoms at Villananitos Beach in San Pedro del Pinatar (23/02/2017)

The Ministry of Water, Agriculture and the Environment begins today the tasks of the project of environmental restoration of sandy bottoms of the beach of Villananitos in the municipal term of San Pedro of Pinatar, that is affected by a process of watering.

The counselor, Adela Martínez-Cachá, explained that "the actions will allow improving the quality of bathing water and the safety of bathers, since the engorgement, besides involving a modification of the sandy biotope, represents a danger of sinking for the Bathers ".

The pilot project, whose budget is 47,795.00 euros, begins today and will have a term of execution of one month.

A thousand cubic meters of sand will be supplied and distributed, with a maximum thickness of 30 centimeters, in an area of ​​130 meters long beach and 15 meters wide, specifically in the area of ​​the beach of Villananitos, near the port sports.

During the visit, Martinez-Cachá was accompanied by the mayor of San Pedro del Pinatar, Visitation Martinez, representatives of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Mar Menor and technical counselors.

These actions at Villananitos beach coincide with the development of the 2017 Litoral Plan of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment (Mapama), which is carrying out the tasks of recovery of beaches affected by the storm of the past Month of December 2016.

So far work has been carried out on Castillitos beach (San Javier), with the removal of between 10 and 20 centimeters of sand very close to the shore, with tractor and scraper, in addition to extending this sand in areas where it is necessary.

In the beach of Punta Brava (Cartagena) is undertaking the manual cleaning of organic and inorganic remains in the zone of the breakwater.

In the case of the beaches of Los Alcázares, the crews are arranging the facilities of footbaths, walls and masonry of the accesses and infrastructures affected in the different beaches.

The head of Environment stated that "all actions are being carried out in coordination between the State and the regional government, following the guidelines of an environmental report prepared by the Ministry, which was based on the report prepared by the spokesperson of the Committee of Scientific Advice of the Mar Menor, Pérez Ruzafa ".

The 2017 Coastal Plan of the Ministry will allocate to the Region of Murcia 4.6 million euros to recover the damaged beaches affected by the storm, which caused sand losses, damage to promenades, loss of footbridges and landslides, and have affected the Beaches of the municipalities of Los Alcazares, San Javier, San Pedro del Pinatar, Cartagena, Aguilas, Lorca and Mazarrón.

The floods affected 16.7 kilometers (42.6 hectares) of its beaches and there were 159 erosion points.

The damage was very intense in Los Alcázares and Santiago de la Ribera (San Javier).

As for Lo Pagan-Villananitos (San Pedro del Pinatar) were intense, and in Cartagena, moderate.

The beaches of Los Alcázares, with 5 kilometers of extension, have been the most harmed, since they have disappeared in total 4.5 kilometers.
