The Community entrusts the project to recover the waterfalls of El Ventorrillo (23/08/2017)

The Autonomous Community has put in place a plan to recover the draft of the Ventorrillo dam, making environmental protection and artisanal fishing compatible with the educational, tourist and gastronomic activity in this emblematic space.

The Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Francisco Jodar, made this announcement today in his visit to the fish market of San Pedro del Pinatar, where he was accompanied by the mayor of the town, Visitación Martínez;

The mayor of San Javier, José Miguel Luengo, and representatives of the Fishermen's Guild of the municipality.

Francisco Jódar added that "they have already been entrusted with the necessary work to present a project to recover this unique area of ​​the Mar Menor and increase the draft, which has been reduced in recent years by the deposit of sand from the Mediterranean Sea, And added that "it will be supervised by the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Mar Menor."

The drafting of the recovery and Environmental Impact Assessment projects is expected to be finalized in the second half of this year, with the objective of executing it throughout 2018.

The project will combine a small use of the fishing activity of this type of traditional art with the tourist and educational activity, for the valorization of the fishing activity that is developed in the Mar Menor and is compatible with the environment.

The councilor explained that "it will also be possible to cede a part of this renewed corrugated for environmental groups or research centers to carry out environmental studies, with the aim of contributing to a better knowledge of the lagoon, an emblematic place for the Region of Murcia".

Fishermen's Guild

The Fishermen's Guild of San Pedro del Pinatar is in charge of managing the Lo Pagán fish markets, dedicated to the commercialization of the catches obtained in the Mar Menor, and that of San Pedro del Pinatar or the Mediterranean, dedicated to catches obtained in the Mediterranean.

Last year, 784 tonnes of fish landed in the two fish markets managed by the San Pedro del Pinatar Fishermen's Guild, worth 3.3 million euros, representing 23 percent of regional trade.

Specifically, 291 tonnes of dorada, with a value of 1.2 million;

164 tons of boquerón, worth 500,000 euros, and 24,000 kilos of prawns, worth 422.00 euros.

The next shrimp season starts soon on 10 September.

The fishing that takes place in the Mar Menor uses fishing techniques and traditional gear.

By 2016, 63 vessels were registered, mostly engaged in the minor arts, employing 114 workers.

Traditional fishing gear is rooted in the culture of the Mar Menor and respects the environment.
