This prominent nobleman and politician occupied a fundamental place in Murcia politics, society and culture in the last half of the nineteenth century, an influence that would also transfer to Lo Pagan, where he settled his summer residence and would eventually adopt his name.
The granddaughter of Pedro Pagán y Ayuso, Gertrudis Brígida Pagán Hernández, was in charge of offering this conference on the figure of the bourgeois and politician Murcian, organized by the Department of Culture within the framework of the VII Days of History and Archeology Villa de San Pedro in a crowded Barón de Benifayó Museum last Friday, September 29.
The speaker reviewed the life of Pedro Pagan and Ayuso (Murcia, 1843-Librilla, 1909), who among other positions was mayor of Murcia for a short time in the First Republic, president of the constitutionalist partisan of Murcia in 1873 and deputy cuts by the province of Murcia (1872 and 1881).
In addition, Pedro Pagán y Ayuso was a recognized promoter of the University of Murcia, of traditions such as the burial of the Sardina and a wealthy patron that promoted the culture in the Region.
Thus, as the chronicles of the time relate, he transferred this important work of cultural diffusion to Lo Pagan's summer estate in La Puntica, "as they approached those who wanted to hear sonnets, strings of guitars, arias at the piano and some habanera, arriving at to pass by there figures like Cánovas of the Castle, the baron of Benifayo and Emilio Castelar ... As for his relationship with Lo Pagan, Gertrudis explained that Pedro Pagán y Ayuso buys from Floridablanca the Hacienda Vistabella, on the seafront of what was then known as "La Puntica", being one of the first nobles to settle here his summer residence, attracting other wealthy families from Murcia, who did the same.
This is why, after the civil war, the name of Lo Pagan is officially signed for this hamlet of San Pedro del Pinatar, being toponym of the family Pagan and Ayuso, concluded the rapporteur.
