A seminar to launch the European project SIRRIMED meets this Thursday and Friday in San Pedro del Pinatar experts in the management of water resources in the Mediterranean.
This initiative, led by the Centre for Soil Science and Applied Biology Segura (CEBAS-CSIC) and funded by the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Community, can unite the efforts of institutions in Europe (UK, Netherlands, France, Italy, Greece and Spain), northern Africa (Morocco) and the Middle East (Egypt and Lebanon), with the aim of Mediterranean agriculture make the best use of irrigation water.
Mediterranean basins have many over-exploitation of water resources, irrigated agriculture remains the main consumer of available water.
The growing demand for urban areas and the possible worsening of weather conditions threaten to reduce the resources available for agriculture, a key sector to achieve or maintain food security and welfare of many countries, especially in the Mediterranean.
This critical situation requires irrigation and alternative management practices that save water, are applied as soon as possible to ensure sustainable food production.
Specifically, SIRRIMED project partners are working together on the implementation of an Integrated Water Management of Irrigation to improve efficiency in the use of this increasingly scarce resource.
This strategy includes innovative irrigation technologies and management mechanisms applied directly on farms, but also at larger scales in the irrigation communities and even in watersheds.
The future of Mediterranean agriculture and, ultimately, our food, depends largely on this type of international initiatives that the Region of Murcia encourages and strongly supports.
