Health participates in international exercise in search and rescue of submarines in San Pedro del Pinatar (09/06/2011)

The Ministry of Health is collaborating with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the Spanish Armada in the international exercise "Bold Monarch 11 'search and rescue submarine developed since last May 28 and until Friday morning, June 10, in waters near San Pedro del Pinatar.

Health has made available to NATO's three hospitals.

In addition, staff of the Health Emergency Management has coordinated the warnings from the Emergency Coordination Centre and held in pre-alert medicalized Emergency Unit of San Javier, the Torre Pacheco, La Manga and the two Cartagena.

The aim of the exercise is to enhance international cooperation for the rescue of people and modernizing rescue techniques.

For evacuations resulting from the simulation, the Navy and the Air Force provided two helicopters that transported patients to the Hospital Universitario Virgen de La Arrixaca, Hospital Universitario del Mar Menor Los Arcos and the University Hospital Santa Lucía of Cartagena.

The Ministry of Health stressed the importance of these activities to promote coordination between institutions in preparation for any eventuality and appreciated the intervention of health professionals, as it is a practice done for the first time in Spanish waters.

Rescue

In these exercises, conducted every three years, employing over 2,000 people between envelopes of ships, submarines and rescue systems.

Among the participating units highlights the presence of submarines from Russia, Spain, Turkey and Portugal, vessels from twelve countries and four mini-submarine rescue of NATO, Italy, Russia and the United States.

The drill is to rescue the crews of the four submarines after being trapped on the seabed.

Reactivated after the emergency began a series of actions ending in a rescue operation run from the command ship 'Galicia'.

Coordination with health services in the region have been undertaken by the Army Corps lieutenant colonel and aide Health Maritime Action Admiral, Antonio Segado.

Maritime Action Admiral, Francisco Javier Franco, has moved its appreciation to the Minister of Health office, María Ángeles Palacios, with the collaboration of his Department in this practice.
