Directors of Agriculture and Water, Antonio Cerdá, and Public Works and Planning, Antonio Sevilla, recently visited the port of San Javier to consider installing a breeding ground for bluefin tuna (hatchery), whose investment would make the company Murcia Ricardo Fuentes e Hijos.
The Region of Murcia is a reference area for biological closure of this species as a result of work being developed within the project 'culture and larval bluefin tuna farming', coordinated by Professor Manabu Seoka, the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, Murcia Center researchers from the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, and funded by Cajamurcia, Cajamar, Caja Mediterráneo and La Caixa.
The Region continues to progress successfully in the reproduction of bluefin tuna bred in captivity, with more than 45 offshore specimens exceeding three kilos of weight and year of life, compared to 103 days of survival achieved two years ago.
