The Department of Sports and Sports Association organized Pinatarense sporting event that will bring together paddlers from different clubs of Spain and France on Saturday June 1
The mayor of San Pedro del Pinatar, Visitation Martinez, Councillor for Sports, Pedro Luis Vera, President of AD Pinatarense, Raul Lopez, and the representative of the Federation of Murcia Canoeing, Nicolas Lopez, today presented the First International Festival Dragon Boat to be held this weekend in downtown Water activities and the beach of La Puntica.
The mayor has indicated that this sporting event will bring together around 200 paddlers of different clubs and associations in Spain and France.
Also, Visitation Martinez explained that this sport, which has more than 2000 years old, is practiced in a boat similar to a canoe, which is characterized by a dragon's head and tail, and where 12, 22 or 52 paddlers join forces to promote it.
The mayor stressed the spectacle of these races and thanked the efforts of the Department of Sports and Sports Association Pinatarense to concentrate an event of its kind to allow publicize the Mar Menor and the environment for hundreds of athletes and fans to water sports.
For his part, Councillor for Sports, Pedro Luis Vera, recalled that the club pinatarense pioneered this sport, competing for the first time in Germany in 2005 and earning the European Championship clubs in the Polish city of Poznan in 2006.
In addition, the AD Pinatarense has achieved excellent results in European competitions held in Italy, Cyprus and Portugal.
The council has said that the path of AD Pinatarense municipality makes an ideal place to celebrate this international festival and expressed his commitment for the event to be held again in the coming years.
For his part, President of AD Pinatarense noted that the tournament will be held on Saturday, June 1, from 10:00 am, and the categories include male, female and mixed in vessels 12 and 22 paddlers in distance of 200 meters.
The qualifying tournament will include different sleeves 3 and 4 boats, fighting the final races of 16:00 to 18:15 hours.
After the awards ceremony, around 19:00 hours will be held at the racecourse Nautical Activities Center called counter competition where two teams of 6-8 paddlers will compete in the same boat in a similar exercise to the game pull the rope.
Raul Lopez has also informed that the Sunday, June 2, from 11:00 to 13:30, there will be an open house at the Center for Water activities for those who wish to know this sport and shoveling these special vessels.
