The need to find a balance between the protection of nature and economic activity has been demonstrated a doctoral thesis at the Faculty of Arts at the University of Murcia who has studied the Regional Park of Las Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar.
This research, in which the author, Gustavo Alfonso Ballesteros Pelegrin, has been rated as suitable cum laude, reflects that the Park has grown from an influx of about 300,000 visitors between 1999 and 2003, more than a million in 2010.
The theory says that the weirs "are one of the most harmonious expressions of human intervention on the coast and an example of the use of fishery resources based on knowledge of the territory and its functionality."
The study also states that economic output port reflects a decline of fishing activity, whereas, by contrast, aquaculture in floating cages located opposite to it "presents a significant revenue."
The dissertation was supervised by professors from the University of Murcia Francisco Calvo and Yolanda Alvarez.
