The Government delegate opens the International Expert Meeting on methods for assessing fish stocks in the Mediterranean (02/03/2009)

The government delegate in the Region of Murcia, Rafael González Tovar, inaugurated this morning the international expert meeting on methods for assessing fish stocks in the Mediterranean.

These seminars are held at the Oceanographic Center of San Pedro del Pinatar until 6 March.

At this meeting attended by researchers from the European Union, most of the Mediterranean (Italy, Greece, France, Spain, Croatia, Cyprus and Malta), but also other countries like Britain and Germany.

It is envisaged that its development will progress and improve assessments of fish stocks in the Mediterranean in the EU level.

In his speech, Tovar Gonzalez stressed that the Government of Spain is developing a fisheries policy in tune with the European Union, which is firmly committed to the sustainable management of fisheries resources, the fight against illegal fishing and promoting Research, Development and Innovation in the process of fisheries and aquaculture.

In this sense, the delegate has submitted that the Ministry of Environment, Rural and Marine Affairs has set targets for fisheries enhancement of the productive sector of marine aquaculture through the Aquaculture Strategic Plan of the Spanish, the development of Strategic Plan for Technological Innovation of the fisheries sector and the implementation of the Programme of R & D + i, which includes areas of knowledge vital for the future of this sector.

"The government resolutely supports sustainable and responsible fisheries, while profitable for an activity that deserves the right to offer to future generations the same opportunities to practice an activity committed and responsible to the marine environment both in their habitats as resources, "said.

In this sense, González Tovar recalled that the Government of Spain, has recently taken decisions of great socioeconomic significance, as it is kept closed while fishing for anchovy biomass levels are not satisfactory or the rigorous control of fishing for bluefin tuna and increased monitoring of fattening farms installed in the same country.

Indeed, last week saw the release of excess fluid in the vicinity of the beach Gorguel.

Finally, Gonzalez Tovar has encouraged researchers to gather this week at the Oceanographic Center of San Pedro del Pinatar, Spanish Oceanographic Institute under the Ministry of Science and Innovation, to make further progress in the methods of analysis and assessment of fish stocks .

"This research brings us closer to a more precise knowledge about the current ecological status of species subject to fishing action, and can therefore make more reliable predictions about its future. The key is to intelligently combine social, economic environmental and resource exploitation of the seas and oceans, "he concluded.

The IEO Murcia currently working on three major research areas: Pequerías, Marine and Aquaculture.

The first group of tasks is the assessment of stocks, biogeography, and fisheries ecosystems.

In the second research are intended to seagrass meadows, jellyfish, marine pollution and physiology of bivalves.

Finally, in line Aquaculture undertake projects related to improving commercial fish immunology, nutrition and farming of bluefin tuna.

It is precisely in this last item, the tuna farming activities, which focus one of the most important projects currently leading a major international scientific program on the closure of the reproductive cycle of this species.
