The Community reforested dunes Regional Park of Salinas de San Pedro del Pinatar, with the participation of volunteers (23/10/2009)

The Ministry of Agriculture and Water, through the General Directorate of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity, held tomorrow a plantation of native flora species in the dunes of the Regional Park of Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar, with the aim of strengthening populations of some of the most endangered plants have their habitats in the dunes of the park.

This activity is part of the Environmental Volunteer Program of the Ministry and with the participation of volunteers in the draft action 'Artemia' and project 'Eusimonia'.

Among the species to be planted include coastal juniper (Juniperus turbinata), large-sized shrub species that is endangered, mastic (Pistacia lentiscus), typical shrub that plays an important role in fixing the sand and land development, Teucrium dunense, aromatic herb of sandy coastal property will be distributed through the more open areas, and cotton (Otanthus maritimus), a species that is declared to be extinct in the region of Murcia, although it has recently cited dunes in the area of El Mojon.

All these species to plant come from the nurseries of the region and the Southeast Association of Naturalists.

Project 'Artemia'

The director general of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity, Pablo Fernandez, said about "the important role of voluntary activities within the framework of actions for the conservation of regional parks."

In this regard, he noted that the Draft Action 'Artemia' is one of the eight Environmental Volunteer of the Region, which focuses its efforts in the Regional Park of Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar.

In addition to planting native species in dune environments, the team of volunteers performs a number of other activities such as censuses, bird banding and monitoring of protected flora, as well as reptiles and amphibians, among others.

Fernandez said that "volunteers conduct these activities in a totally selfless weekends from February to November and the important work carried out does not go unnoticed, but is considered a management tool."
